BRADENTON — There is a mural of Herbie Rose painted on the side of a building in downtown Bradenton, just another reminder that the local artist was seen by many as larger than life.
Rose, who died June 27 at age 87, is being remembered as a kind man, patient teacher, talented artist and something of a visionary.
Though Rose did not have the original idea to start the Village of the Arts neighborhood in Bradenton, he was one of six original founders and was instrumental in attracting other artists to live in the area.
Village of the Arts is a colorful area consisting of live-in art galleries and eateries near McKechnie Field.
Bradenton city officials came up with the idea more than 30 years ago and Rose, because of his stature, was one of the first to be called upon to launch it. Rose was so respected that Bradenton Mayor Wayne Poston anointed him the honorary mayor of the Village of the Arts.
