Helle Thorning-Schmidt was born in 1966 in Virum, Denmark.

She graduated from the University of Copenhagen and later obtained a Master's degree in Politics and Public Administration from the College of Europe in Bruges, Belgium. While in Bruges, she met her future husband, Stephen Kinnock, the son of British politician Neil Kinnock.
