Juan Ponce de León (1474–1521) was a Spanish explorer and conquistador who is best known for his quest to find the Fountain of Youth and his role in the early exploration of Florida and other parts of the Caribbean.

Born in Santervás de Campos, Spain, Ponce de León was a significant figure in the Age of Discovery. Ponce de León first gained prominence as a participant in Christopher Columbus’s second voyage to the Americas in 1493. He later became the governor of the eastern part of the island of Hispaniola, where he focused on gold mining and exploration.

In 1513, Ponce de León set out on an expedition to explore the unknown lands to the north.

This journey led him to the coast of what is now Florida, where he is believed to have made the first recorded European landing on the mainland of North America. He named the region “La Florida” due to the lush vegetation he encountered.
